DFS and FRS in Windows 2003 Server R2?
Today, I just about died when I realized what happened, and I still don’t understand. I set up a distributed file system on server#1. It was a domain root. Under the domain root, I have 4 links. The links have 2 targets (data server and backup server). I had to stop the replication system, to increase the Staging area space. When I restarted, there was an NTFS pre-existing directory that had some of the files i was replicating. In addition, those files were also replicating from the root. So I stopped FRS and deleted everything on the backup server and recreated the link folders. I started the replication with the data server as the “initial master.” I check the progress about 20 minutes later, and ALL MY FILES AND FOLDERS WERE GONE!!! For the life of me, I don’t know why. Does anyone have any information? I’ve been trying to figure this out for about 7 hours now. (I was able to download a toold to recover some data, but don’t want to risk losing more company info….
Deleting the files from your backup server constituted as an update to the DFS replication process and that status was replicated out to the other replicas.
You should have removed the replicas first before deleting, not stop FRS.
